After two thrilling seasons, Channel 4's crime action drama will not be back for a third installment because of budget issues. A spokesperson of the channel revealed Utopia Season 2, which ended last August, will be the final chapter of the franchise, Den of Geeks reports.
"Utopia," crafted by Dennis Kelly, debut on January 2013 and had its fair share of good reviews from television drama critics. Kelly, who also penned "Pulling," and "Matilda: The Musical," initially hinted that there will be a season 3 and even season 4 for the thriller but Channel 4 seemingly has other plans.
Channel 4 has acknowledged the top quality and originality of the series but its depth and boldness, in terms of its premise, are not able to translate into good ratings. "Utopia is truly channel-defining: strikingly original, powered by Dennis Kelly's extraordinary voice and brought to life in all its technicolor glory through Marc Munden's undeniable creative flair and vision," the Channel 4's talking head said.
Den of Geek reported that Utopia's home network also said it is a "brilliantly warped and nail-biting series" that "has the honor of ensuring audiences will never look at a spoon in the same way again." But sadly, the series with low number of viewers have not generated enough income. In short, the show is axed because of financial issues and not because of its content.
"Utopia" series channel also said, "It's always painful to say goodbye to shows we love, but it's a necessary part of being able to commission new drama, a raft of which are launching on the channel throughout 2015."
On the other hand, "Utopia" TV series may have ended but The Guardian cited that the drama set a standard of boldness and originality that will be remembered. Alistair Petrie even said the show's end is a "huge shame but it will have a legacy in how bold drama can be".
On a lighter side, it is already confirmed that "Utopia" will be adopted in America. The upcoming series is reportedly eyeing a 2015 release on HBO. The most exciting part is the crime drama's American version will be directed by David Fincher and will be penned by Gone Girl author's Gillian Flynn. No casts has been unveiled yet but production is rumored to be underway.
