KINGDOM Talks About Bringing Out the Worship Elements on their Brand New Acoustic Album
Kingdom is made up of Jordan Abina (Vox/Elec), Veronica Allen (Vox), Sean Aspenlind (Elec), Nathan Parrish (Bass), Steven Cummings (Drums), and Justin Achanzar (Keys). The band calls Rocklin, CA their home and all currently work an serve at Destiny Christian Church. Kingdom is involved in full-time ministry and all feel a call to full-time ministry with their lives. It is our desire to see people come to know Jesus as their Lord and savior, we are privileged to be able to spread the gospel through music and further the Kingdom of Heaven.
On April 14th, they are releasing "Acoustic Sessions" on DREAM Records. We are so honored to be able to chat with them on this exclusive Hallels' interview.
Hallels: On your press release you said, "The world doesn't need more Christian bands or Christian products...it needs more Christ." How do you as a group try to bring out more of Christ through your ministry?
Growing up I looked up to a lot of Christian punk bands, metal bands etc. Now I'm watching some of my hero's walk away from the faith and although it is a little disheartening, it has strengthened my resolve to keep KINGDOM a ministry just as much as it is a band. We all got our start in music by serving the church wether it be in youth, college group or Sunday worship and continue to stay connected to our local church while playing music. I think it helps keep perspective that our gifts and talents may fade but as Christians we are called to serve and disciple others with our lives. We really strive to write songs that are unapologetically about Christ, no gimmicks. Nate
Hallels: I believe some of you came from Mercy Ministries where you take care of women in need. How does such a ministry of love enrich your worship? And how does such a ministry affect or deepen your music today?
KINGDOM actually got its start when Jordan wrote and recorded a song (Flood Song) for the girls of Mercy, to give them as a gift for Christmas. KINGDOM officially became a band later that year when that song was entered into a contest to open for the Rock and Worship Roadshow. We won that contest and needed more songs! So the band formed and we went on from there. Being attached and serving in a ministry like Mercy is great because you get to see firsthand the power of God to rescue and restore people, it has inspired a lot of our writing.
Hallels: Let's talk about your new acoustic album. Why an acoustic album?
Although we have always been and continue to be a worship band, because we happen to rock a bit harder than your average worship band, we have been dubbed a Christian rock band. especially since a few of our songs have charted on rock radio. With this album we wanted to bring out some more of the worship elements. Stripping down the sound and limiting some of the production on this record was a really cool experience. We wanted the songs to have a real organic feel, even to the extent of leaving mistakes in if we felt that the take felt right.
Hallels: Did you re-record the whole album from scratch or did you just strip down the backing sound and kept the vocals?
We recorded completely from scratch and in some cases just found the tempo we wanted, pressed record and let the arrangement of the song come naturally with no prior structure. Working with our producer, Math Bishop was a lot of fun, he brings a lot of new approaches instrumentally that give these songs a unique feel from our previous records.
Hallels: Some of our readers may not have heard your new single "Victorious." Tell us more about this song?
Victorious is one of our favorites, especially performing it in a live worship setting. The song is about Christ's victory over death, hell and the grave and the purchase of our lives through His blood.
Hallels: What's next for Kingdom? Are you guys already planning your next record?
We are definitely feeling the itch to record again already! We have some new material written and are looking forward to creating some new music.
Hallels: For our readers who would like to purchase your new acoustic album and/or find out more about you, where can they go?
