Taylor Swift Sings About About Death and Resurrection in Her Dark New Single

Taylor Swift has just released her brand new single "Look What You Made Me." This is the lead single taken from her upcoming sixth studio album, Reputation. The single has been noted for its darker and angry lyrics which finds Swift dissing her former lover. Nevertheless, Swift does utilize the Christian image of death and resurrection to signify the death of her faith in her former lover and the resurrection of her new (and wiser) self.
Swift sings: "But I got smarter, I got harder in the nick of time/Honey, I rose up from the dead, I do it all the time/I've got a list of names and yours is in red, underlined/I check it once, then I check it twice, oh!"
Swift wrote the song with Jack Antonoff; Fred Fairbrass, Richard Fairbrass, and Rob Manzoli of the band Right Said Fred are also credited as songwriters because the song interpolates their 1991 song "I'm Too Sexy"
"Look What You Made Me Do" received polarized reception from critics, with some praising the song as a welcomed dark departure from her earlier work, and others writing it off as an anthem to pettiness. USA Today said that the polarizing reaction to the song illustrated Swift's position as a "ubiquitous cultural force". The Telegraph Randy Lewis praised the song, deeming Swift and Antonoff's work as "blow[ing] past the production clichés of clap tracks and hiccuped syllabic hooks that have proliferated across Top 40 fare in recent years with boldly inventive textures and fresh melodic, rhythmic and sonic accents" and discussing how "Musically, the track is constantly shifting, a manifestation of the myriad conflicting and conflicted emotional states expressed in the lyrics.
Conversely, Maura Johnston of The Guardian wrote a negative review of the song, faulting the "sloppy" lyrics and saying: "The pop star's return is full of visceral disses, but it's not clear whether she's playing a role or being herself"
