"Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" Premieres This Weekend and Is Rumored to Surpass "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" in Box Office Success
Fox's "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" opens tonight in theaters in late-night 3D screenings all across the country. Critics have already begun to disagree about this film; some claim that is missing something that its predecessor, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" had, while others maintain that this is clearly a sequel that is better than the first movie (a true feat for Hollywood filmakers).
An interesting mix of people compiles the audience for these films. Some have come with bearing in mind the original "Planet of the Apes" films that began to make their debut in 1968 and starred film legend Charlton Heston. Still others are youngsters, raised on a steady diet of superhero films and "Godzilla" remakes and clutching high expectations for a big-budget wowser of a film.
"Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" was directed by Matt Reeves and produced by Mark Bomback. Leader of the chimps, Caesar (played by the one and only Andy Serkis) emerges into a post-Apocalyptic world to attempt a peacemaking treaty with the humans, a slippery slope indeed. Human and primate mesh and become undefinable as they give way to their most primal, violent instincts, until it is almost impossible to tell who are the civilized ones: the humans, or the apes.
Although this is, as previously stated, the second in a series of related films, screenwriter Mark Bomback claims, "You don't have to see any of the other films to enjoy this one." Only box office figures will be able to definitely tell the outcomes for "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," but it does not seem unlikely that it will quickly become a fan favorite
