D. James Kennedy Ministries DocuFilm "One Nation Under God" Showcases America's Christian Founding

At a time when lawless mobs topple statues to erase history and remake the American story, D. James Kennedy Ministries presents on this July 4th weekend a powerful one-hour documentary showing how Christian faith played the decisive role in the settling and founding of America. The program, One Nation Under God, airs nationwide this weekend and is available for viewing online now at DJKM.org.
Produced in 2005, One Nation Under God is hosted by D. James Kennedy, Ph.D., the late founder of D. James Kennedy Ministries, and filmed in historic Williamsburg and Yorktown.
"I am delighted we are re-airing this unique, original production which has a profound message for today," said Frank Wright, Ph.D., President and CEO of D. James Kennedy Ministries.
"Right now, our freedoms hang by a thread," he added. "Just one vote on the U.S. Supreme Court safeguards the liberties for which so many died-and that vote is in doubt. This, as anarchists rage on the streets of America. For these reasons, this compelling reminder of the original source of American freedom has never been more needed."
One Nation Under God features experts from Mount Vernon, the Library of Congress, American University, the University of Houston, and elsewhere. Together, these experts offer evidence for an intimate connection between God and government that led to America's birth.
The special looks into these controversial questions:
- Did America begin as a secular or Christian nation?
- Were George Washington and the Founders deists?
- Is the U.S. Constitution a "godless document" or the product of a long Christian legal tradition?
- Have Christians placed a halo on American history, or do secular historians filter out God?
"The one point upon which virtually all the Founders were agreed was that religion played a vital role in promoting social order, civic virtue, and political prosperity," contends American University scholar Daniel Dreisbach.
Author and historian David Barton, named one of Time Magazine's "25 Most Influential Evangelicals," agrees. "Of the 250 folks that we would call Founding Fathers, there are maybe a dozen, which is maybe five percent, that weren't religious. We're talking maybe a dozen out of 250."
Standing in Yorktown at the gravesite of Declaration of Independence signer Thomas Nelson, Jr., a man bankrupted in the service of American liberty, Dr. Kennedy said the Founders would be "amazed...to see our nation-which was founded in large part for the purpose of religious freedom-becoming a nation where Christianity is being systematically forced out of the public square."
And Dr. Kennedy cites John Quincy Adams who declared: "Posterity! You will never know how much it cost the present generation to preserve your freedom! I hope you will make good use of it! If you do not, I shall repent it in heaven that I ever took half the pains to preserve it!"
