U2's Bono and The Edge Bring Songs & Prayers in Ukraine
U2's Bono and guitarist The Edge performed a 40-minute concert in a metro station in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv. Invited by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, they performed the Ben E King classic "Stand By Me" and other songs alongside members of Ukrainian band Antytila.
The concert was Bono's way of showing support for the people of Ukraine. Bono writes, "The brave people of Ukraine are fighting for their freedom -- and for ours -- in the face of unspeakable violence and an unjust invasion. More than 4 million people, mostly women and children, have had to flee for their lives -- a population nearly the size of Ireland."
Bono, alongside The Edge, sang the Ben E King classic "Stand By Me." The set also included performances of "With or Without You," "Desire," "Angel of Harlem," and "Vertigo."
"Your president leads the world in the cause of freedom right now... The people of Ukraine are not just fighting for your own freedom, you're fighting for all of us who love freedom," Bono told a crowd of about 100 gathered inside the Khreshchatyk metro station. We pray that you will enjoy some of that peace soon."
Bono continues to encourage. "The brave people of Ukraine are fighting for their freedom -- and for ours -- in the face of unspeakable violence and an unjust invasion. More than 4 million people, mostly women and children, have had to flee for their lives -- a population nearly the size of Ireland. World leaders must stand up and stand by Ukranians now ... those who are fighting and those who have fled ... and stand with refugees everywhere who have been forced from their homes and their lands."
