Doug Anderson of Ernie Haase & Signature Sound Offers Exclusive Insights into "Live In Memphis"
Ernie Haase & Signature Sound have just released their in-concert set, Live In Memphis. Showcasing the rich history of quartet singing in America, the 14-song Club44 Records release was executive produced by Haase and produced by Wayne Haun. Hallmarked by multiple guest appearances, Live In Memphis showcases a distinctive selection of Broadway, Gospel, Great American Songbook, and Spiritual standards spanning more than a century.
We are honored to chat with Doug Anderson, the baritone vocalist for Ernie Haase & Signature Sound, for this exclusive interview.
Q: Thank you for doing this interview. Why did you revisit the Great American Songbook and Spiritual Standards for your new album?
This is one of the most exciting and rewarding projects I've ever been part of. We wanted to pay homage to the art form of quartet music and its legacy in our lives. To revisit these classic tunes is something we've always wanted to do. We listened to these songs growing up and now to get to present our versions to the world is an honor.
Q: How do you put your stamp on these standards?
We wanted to stay true to the original versions while putting our "Signature Sound" on them. I think updating and tweaking the arrangements just a little did that. Of course, we bring our own style and energy to these classics too, and our producer, Wayne Haun, gets most of the credit for that!
Q: You've gotten to work with Blackwood Brothers and Oak Ridge Boys' Duane Allen on this record. What was it like working with them?
Duane Allen of The Oak Ridge Boys and the Blackwood Brothers are heroes to us. We have listened to them and learned from them for years. To stand onstage beside these artists was a bucket list item for me. They bring a long history of excellence and passion to this industry, and singing with them for the Live In Memphis recording was a night I will never forget.
Q: I believe you have also included a couple of originals. Can you talk to us about the song "He Made A Change?"
"He Made a Change" was the last #1 song for the Cathedral Quartet, and it was co-written by Ernie Haase and Joel Lindsey. These days it's a crowd favorite for Ernie Haase & Signature Sound in concert, so it only seemed fitting to feature it on this recording.
Q: What's the story behind "You'll Find Him There"?
It's a new quartet number that hits all the styles of traditional four-part harmony with that bass and tenor lead. It's a foot-stomping, hand-clapping feel good song and we love to do it!
Q: How do you hope this new album will speak to your fans?
I hope this project introduces the art of quartet singing to a broader audience, and I hope fans appreciate our efforts to honor the great songs in our field. More than anything, we want folks to hear the message of Hope and feel the Spirit of God and the love that was in the room that night.
