Insurgent Movie Release Date is March 20; Two More Divergent Movies Greenlit To Follow After Two More Hunger Games Movies; With New Director and New Cast Members

Insurgent movie release date is March 20, 2015, as originally announced by Summit Entertainment, a Lionsgate subsidiary, following Divergent's $4.9 million debut take at the box office. Said Lionsgate chief executive officer Jon Feltheimer in his press statement, "We're off to a great start with strong numbers from all regions of the country, urban, suburban and rural alike. We're confident that 'Divergent' is on its way to becoming another important franchise for us, and we have just greenlit the second film, 'Insurgent'."
Divergent and Insurgent are the first and second books in the "Divergent" trilogy for the young-adult genre written by Veronica Roth. The third book in the series, Allegiant, will also be made into a movie. In fact, it will be made into two films, namely, The Divergent Series: Allegiant Part I which will be released on March 18, 2016, and The Divergent Series: Allegiant Part II which will screen in theaters on March on March 24, 2017. According to a report from Variety, Lionsgate vice chairman Michael Burns said, "...we like the idea of a 'Divergent' film every March to complement our 'Hunger Games' films every November."
With its new "Divergent" franchise, Lionsgate/Summit now dominates in the young-adult niche, considering that the five "Twilight" films earned over $3.3 billion worldwide while the first two "Hunger Games" have made over $1.4 billion. Divergent, which was released to theaters on March 18, 2014, has so far already grossed about $275 million in box office earnings. Another Hunger Games movie [The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I] is scheduled to be released on November 21, 2014.
Insurgent will have a new director in the person of Robert Schwentke since Divergent director Neil Burger announced that he will not continue with the series. Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Kate Winslet, Jai Coutney, Ansel Elgort, Ray Stevenson, Zoe Kravits, Miles Teller, Maggie Q, and Mekhi Phifer have confirmed they will return to reprise their roles in the first film. Additional cast for the sequel includes Octavia Spencer, Suki Waterhouse, Jonny Weston, Naomi Watts, Daniel Dae Kim, Stephanie Leigh Schlund, Rosa Salazar and Emjay Anthony.
