Relient K, New Album, 'Collapsible Lung,' To Be Released July 2
Reliant K, rock band, is planning on releasing their next album, 'Collapsible Lung,' on July 2.
This album will be the GRAMMY®-nominated band's seventh LP project and will be a digital-only release with disc and vinyl editions available at Relient K concerts over the summer, according to a press release from MERGE. Songs on the album have been co-written by names like Fernando Garibay (Lady Gaga), Ari Levine (Cee Lo Green, Bruno Mars), Evan Bogart (Beyonce, Rihanna) and Tim Pagnotta (lead singer/writer for Sugarcult). "This time around, we wanted to have a collection of songs that surprised even us," said the band's frontman, Matt Thiessen. "To do that, we teamed up with several other writers in LA, Nashville, and New York City. This ensured that the new LP would be unpredictable. Each song includes a different combination of authors, yet there is an underlying thread that ties the tunes together thematically. We took an experimental approach creating the album, and we couldn't be more pleased with the result."
Thiessen is a gifted song-writer himself, having co-written a number of pop hits over the years, including Owl City's 2012 hit 'Good Time,' Kelly Clarkson's 'Long Shot,' and award-winning song, 'When Can I See You Again' from 'Wreck-It Ralph,' according to the MERGE release. Thiessen and his bandmate, Matt Hoopes, have been playing together since 1997, when they were both in High School. They have since released six full-length albums, three of which where certified Gold, created several hit singles, recieved a GRAMMY-nomination, won two Dove Awards and performed on shows like, 'The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,' 'Late Night with Conan O' Brien' and 'Jimmy Kimmel Live.'
Some lyric videos have already been released of songs from the new album including, 'Don't Blink,' 'Lost Boy,' and bonus track, 'That's My Jam,' featuring Owl City.
In an interview with Jesusfreakhideout, Relient K explained that the record is finished, but the band is waiting on some logistics before releasing it in July. "We mastered the record in January (2013), so with the record completely done, it took a while to get the artwork together, and then also we were just figuring out how we were going to put it out, how we were going to distribute it, release it officially, and that just went through several different stages of development, and I'm actually really happy with where we're at right now. We're putting it out on our own record label, Mono Vs Stereo, and it gives us all the control that we need, and we're distributing through Columbia, they're on board to a certain extent, but I think it's really in the best case, because we can do what we want, and if they want to, you know, say, take us onto radio, or like go, do whatever on whatever level, then those things are already kind of written into place with how that'll work. We're 'cautiously optimistic,'" Hoopes said. This album will be Relient K's second studio release on Mono Vs. Stereo, which is a partnership between Relient K and Gotee Records.
Thiessen told Jesusfreakhideout that the album came out of a time when the band had slowed down after non-stop touring and he decided to write the new album rather than feeling like he was wasting a lot of time after things had slowed down. "Collapsible Lung, Yeah, it's really just kind of that theme of time, and the meaning behind that," Hoopes said.
The album is available now for pre-order on iTunes for only $7.99, and includes bonus track 'That's My Jam,' featuring Owl City. 'That's My Jam,' is also available seperately on iTunes.
This summer, Relient K will be touring in the U.S. with special guests, 'The Almost' and 'The Rocket Boys,' beginning on July 2, the day of their album release. They will be appearing as part of the Vans Warped Tour, in addition to the other performances that they have throughout July.
