Serena Williams Wins 2014 US Open Defeating Caroline Wozniacki for 18th Grand Slam Victory
The 2014 US Open finals were held Sunday afternoon in New York City at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Serena Williams was playing for history as she went up against Caroline Wozniacki in the women's singles final.
The 32-year-old Williams went on to defeat the Danish star in two sets by a score of 6-3, 6-3 to win for the third straight time at the grand slam tournament.
This was a monumental win for Williams as it gave her Grand Slam win number 18 which puts her in legendary company as she tied Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova with 18 Grand Slam singles titles.
"It was a pleasure to win my first Grand Slam here and now No. 18," said Williams after the finals match.
Wozniacki spoke affectionately about Williams after the match. "You're an unbelievable champion and an inspiration to me on and off the court," Wozniacki shared, adding, "You definitely owe drinks later."
Serena Williams won her first U.S. Open in 1999 at age 17. She is currently ranked No. 1 in women's singles tennis. The Women's Tennis Association has ranked her World No. 1 in singles on six separate occasions. She became the World No. 1 for the first time on July 8, 2002, and regained this ranking for the sixth time on February 18, 2013, becoming the oldest world no. 1 player in WTA's history.
Williams holds the most Major singles, doubles, and mixed doubles titles combined amongst active players, male or female. Her record of 33 Major titles puts her seventh on the all-time list: 18 in singles, 13 in women's doubles, and 2 in mixed doubles.
