Fox's Gotham: Netflix bags the distribution rights!
In some astonishing news of the media world, Netflix has managed to bag the distribution rights of Fox's Gotham series, even before the first episode has even been aired. This 'multi-territory' rights marks a new chapter in the media industry, because generally companies used to negotiate the rights for series, country-wise.
The worldwide distribution rights would be handed over to Netflix by Warner Bros Worldwide TV Distribution after the initial season. Jeffrey Schlesinger, who is the president of the Warner Bros Worldwide TV Distribution, confirmed the news. In a statement he said that, in this age of digital media, this deal marks the new beginning of a new era of deal making.
The deal stipulates that Netflix can start airing the first season of 'Gotham' when Fox would start telecasting the second season, i.e. if the production houses decide to have a second season in the first place. It ought to be mentioned here that even though Netflix has bagged the worldwide distribution rights, yet in the countries were Netflix is not present, there the rights would be held in place by Warner Bros.
It is not clear, the amount that Netflix paid for 'Gotham', but well-established sources suggest that it could be in the range of $2 million per episode that Netflix paid in the past for the much-loved NBC show 'Blacklist'. Netflix is hoping to repeat its success story with Fox's Gotham and also laugh all the way to the bank.
Though not much is known about the new show, yet it is public knowledge that it is basically a prequel to the lucrative Batman movie series, though it would be showcased on the small telly. The show is written by Bruno Heller, who is also the man behind the immensely popular show 'The Mentalist'.
