'Gotham' Latest News: Batman TV Series 'Gotham' Named Most Promising New Show by TCA and First Batman Production to Introduce LGBT Character
The Television Critics Association TCA has named Gotham the "most promising new show of the upcoming season." Jane the Virgin came in second followed by the intriguing drama The Affair. Gotham is also the top contender in the drama category followed by The Affair, and running on third is How to Get Away With Murder. The newest superhero series is really creating a buzz. Gotham is set to start on September 22, 2014.
Gotham is actually going to focus on the life of Detective Gordon and how he is fighting crimes, back when Batman was still a boy. The show will also feature Victoria Cartagena who will play the role of a Renee Montoya, a lesbian detective. Her character was also present in the comic book universe.
This is a first for Batman production - featuring an LGBT character. Montoya is not a closeted lesbian and co-executive producer Danny Cannon believes that her character can inspire a lot of people. Cannon said, "Growing up, I rarely saw people of colour or gay people depicted in a positive light, and I know when you don't see yourself reflected in the world around you, it does things to your self-esteem. I know if I had seen a character like Renee on TV when I was younger - a Latina who is smart, powerful, and strong - it would've encouraged me to dream bigger."
Gotham also stars Jada Pinkett-Smith, who will play the role of Fish Mooney - the mob boss. Pinkett-Smith said that it is a "new day" to have a show that is not afraid to "explore the sexual orientations of women."
By now, I think that it's pretty clear that Gotham will not be the traditional series, especially when it comes to traditional sexual roles. Gotham is offering something new to the viewers and we all can't wait how it will turn out.
