'The Sing-Off' Season 5 Returning to NBC for 2014 Holidays
"The Sing Off" is returning to NBC for Season 5. The a cappella singing competition details for the upcoming season are uncertain at this point in terms of number of episodes and release date.
The show, from Sony Pictures Television and Mark Burnett's One Three Media, will air as a holiday event later this season.
NBC brought back the show for Season four last year and ended with a record low for the franchise, with 5.2 million total viewers and a 1.3 among adults 18-49 when it aired on the day before Christmas Eve 2013.
The Season 4 judges were Shawn Stockman (Boyz II Men), and Ben Folds, as well as newcomer Jewel, who replaced Sara Bareilles. The judges for the new season have not been confirmed on who will return or what new judges will be in place.
Original judge Nicole Scherzinger, was later replaced by Sara Bareilles. Bareilles left the show after the third season and was replaced by Jewel for the fourth season.
The Puerto Rican group Nota won the title for the inaugural season in 2009. For season 2, Committed from Huntsville, Alabama took the 2010 title, and for season 3, Pentatonix from Arlington, Texas won the 2011 title. The country group Home Free from Minneapolis, Minnesota won the 2013 title for season 4.
Pentatonix members including Kirstie Maldonado, Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Avi Kaplan, and Kevin Olusola have been the group that has capitalized off of their success on the show the most. They are releasing a new album and upcoming Christmas album in 2014.
They won $200,000 and a recording contract with Sony. Their debut EP, PTX, Volume 1 (2012), charted at #14 on the Billboard 200 and their second release, PTX, Vol. II (2013), debuted #10 on the Billboard 200 and #1 for Independent Albums. They have sold over 500,000 records.[1] The group's third album PTX, Vol. III was released on September 23, 2014, which will be followed by a Christmas album on October 23. PTX Vol. III was actually released early in some countries including Germany on September 20, and the UK on September 21.
Entertainment Weekly reported earlier this Summer that Pentatonix will join the cast of the a cappella-centric film Pitch Perfect 2. The movie is scheduled to release to theaters on May 15, 2015.
