Top Chef Season 12, Premiere Episode Recap

Top Chef Season 12, Premiere Episode Recap
The 12th season of the Top Chef Reality Show began just last night...both the kitchen and the TV screens sizzled with excitement. The new contestants were introduced and it seems like the first episode have already shown signs of who are the sweet, sour and spicy ones among the chefs competing for the most coveted "Top Chef" title. For the past years, the Top Chef has been recognized with prestige in the Culinary Art's Circle and has often been featured in the Food and Wine magazine. Among the 16 contestants, it has been Gregory, who was once a sous chef at Jean-Georges who got the first opportunity to talk. Others who were clearly noticeable contenders were Katsuji and Keriann.
What awaits us this season
This season, the Top Chef will get $125,000, courtesy of Healthy Choice. The Boston culinary scene will be more adventurous this season with the contestants' display of their culinary prowess. They will prove to us why Boston is not just about lobster and baked beans; that there is so much more that Boston can offer. Richard Blais will be joining Tom, Padma and Gail at the judges' table. Richard was the Top Chef: All-Stars' winner and was also clearly the darling of the crowd. His presence will surely liven up this season's episodes.
What the Quickfire Challenge Was
Basic Knife skills will be the primary focus on the first Quickfire Challenge. This will be the clearest indicator of who among the contestants are quite knowledgeable in cutting and presenting the food. All 16 competitors were broken into 4 teams and were given a task to complete a New England themed mise en place with 3 lobsters, 20 oysters, 8 mackerels, and 21 littleneck clams. It should be done in relay style. So they should be very orderly in working. On the first challenge, Adam was struggling with the lobsters while Gregory could barely figure out how to fillet a mackerel. Meanwhile, Katsuji found it quite difficult to use the traditional clam knife in opening the clams.
The elimination challenge
For the first week of Top Chef Season 12, the first elimination challenge was dubbed as "Top Chef Food Festival" and the contestants were tasked to serve 250 guests based on a meal that they first remember cooking. The judges' three favorite dishes were Doug's fried chicken, Gregory's Haitian chicken, and Mei's congee (a rice porridge). Mei won the challenge.
