Ebola Virologist Says Ebola Can Be Airborne: Is It Possible?
While WHO (World Health Organization) and CDC (Centers for Disease Control) officials continue to spread that Ebola can't be transmitted via air from one individual to another, a manual has clearly warned the public that the virus can be an airborne disease in specific circumstances.
The manual was published by USAMRID (US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases) 7th handbook edition entitled "USAMRID Medical Management of Biological Casualties". Its most recent edition was released in 2011, distributed to more than 100, 000 civilian and military healthcare providers all over the world.
On the handbook's 117th page under the "Viral Hemorrhagic Fever" Chapter, a certain category of viruses which included Ebola was emphasized.
According to the USAMRID, "In some circumstances, secondary infections between medical personnel and contacts without direct exposure to body fluid have been recorded in the past. This prompted the people to be fearful of the rare aerosol infection transmission phenomenon." They added, "When viral hemorrhagic fever is suspected, supplemental measures for infection control are indicated."
When this happens, the USAMRID highly recommends that the patient must be hospitalized in an isolation room, if available, with an adjoining room that could be utilized for donning and removing personal protective gear, storing supplies, and decontaminating laboratory containers.
WHO is admitting that there're a few circumstances where the current Ebola strain from West Africa could be transmitted via sneezing and coughing.
"Theoretically, bigger and wet droplets from infected individuals, who either have respiratory-related symptoms caused by a few other conditions or are vomiting violently, can pass-on the virus even in short distances," the World Health Organization said.
An excellent Ebola virologist and biological science professor Dr David Sanders guested on Fox News, Monday, to discuss the research he's been doing. His findings suggest that Ebola, indeed, could be one those airborne viruses.
According to Sanders, "Our research has shown that Ebola can enter the lung's cellular level through the airways. Therefore, it has the natural capacity to enter an exposed person's lung through his airways." Further, "I am not broadcasting that there's evidence that today's spread is due to an airway entry; however, it's not impossible."
